ABOUT
Vision
We believe that fitness should be available to people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. While we prioritize walking and running, we also value biking, hiking, yoga, or any other activity that connects people through fitness and helps them improve their life.
Mission
The Striders main goals are to encourage an active lifestyle and to educate the public on its benefits. Our members grow not only with each other through training, racing and socializing, but with the community by volunteering and supporting each other.
History
The Sheboygan Striders started in 1981 when a few librarians scheduled a meeting with some individuals interested in establishing a running club. Twenty-five runners gathered and chose the name Shoreline Striders. For 22 years the club ran a small and intimate race – the Smelt Run. Due to various conflicts, the yearly event was eventually shuttered.
In April of 2005, facing issues of a dwindling membership base and an over extension of running and life obligations, the decision was made to dissolve the club. Ten years later, however, a different group of individuals met with renewed interest for a local running group. They updated the name, and the club was reborn in 2015 as the Sheboygan County Shoreline Striders Running Club.
In the short time the Sheboygan Striders have been back, our members have volunteered their time, expertise and skill in a variety of venues. In 2019, we took over the former Full Moon Half Marathon and rebranded it to the current Old Plank Sunsest Half Marathon – which runs annually in August – routing racers from Plymouth all the way to Kohler. From stuffing race bags to assisting with race planning to providing pacing for a variety of regional runs, Sheboygan Striders continually look for ways to help the community and have fun while doing it. We have also begun running with myTeam Triumph to help even more people get involved with racing and fitness; people that otherwise wouldn’t be able. In this year’s Old Plank Sunset Half, we look forward to working with high school athletes from several different school districts to put on the best race yet.
The Sheboygan County Shoreline Striders are a member of the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) and have 501(c)(3) non-profit status.
Many thanks to Striders member and ultra-marathon champion Roy Pirrung for his help in documenting Striders history. As Roy would say – “See you in a few miles!”
